We used to make these things when I was a kid using plastic dry cleaner bags, drinking straws and candles. If three of these rose high enough they might catch a really fast wind current and appear to be traveling too fast for balloons.
Thank you all for your suggestions. Now that I’m home I will explain in more detail. I was driving west just east of downtown Champaign. I looked up and saw an orange “fireball”-looking-thing flying south or southeast, in front of me. My first impression was that it was odd, followed by the thought that it might be a plane on fire. I looked for blinking lights and saw none. Then I saw two more similar objects coming behind it, also heading south or southeast. I opened my car window and heard no aircraft and heard nothing unusual. I pulled over and grabbed for my phone but by the time I got the video feature running they were just about out of sight. That was it.

Thought about that — but they were flying pretty fast to the south — exactly the opposite direction of the way the wind was supposed to be blowing per weather.com.
Look at letters on craft USAF or NASA.
Could be military aircraft...
Or the Zeta Reticulans...
Do you have any missing time?
That was the emergency response team that Jim ordered to fix up FR! I hope they didn’t get Zotted before they made it to California!
