It's a generational thing, for heaven's sake. Very few people nowadays -- whatever their politics or ideology or nationality or sexual orientation -- are going to advocate abolishing the rule of law, invading neighboring countries, or gassing ethnic minorities.

This is the most absurd statement I have read all day. The rule of law has been around off and on for thousands of years. Genocide has occured since the Third Reich. No significant genetic changes have evolved in humans lately. Expect nasty things to happen again and even in America.

So American homosexuals are going to start stuffing people into gas chambers. Seriously how likely is that?

My point wasn't that it could never happen again. It was that this idea that one's current political opponents would have been Nazis or would still support Nazi policies, and oneself and one's allies wouldn't is more emotional and polemical than serious or thoughtful. Most of the time it's a stupid "Yay us! Boo them!" comment -- whoever makes it. It's hard to find people here today who want to plunder other countries and enslave their inhabitants.

Most Americans living today have learned that lesson -- whatever happens in Bosnia or Rwanda. Maybe it will be forgotten and we will have to learn it again the hard way, but seriously, if you start out accusing your opponents of being Nazis (in some way) you lose credibility right off.
