During the 2004 election, my wife and I had a standard routine. Every time J. F. Kerry appeared on TV, we would have the following exchange, changing roles at random:

Mr. Lonesome: Ya know, John Kerry was in Vietnam.
Mrs. Lonesome: You don’t say!
Mr. Lonesome: You’d think something like would be in the papers on the TV news, wouldn’t you?
