The title needs an adjective added, that’s nasty...

It’s not really that complicated to trim most street type trees (less than 25 feet high), but if you don’t know where to make the cuts (branch juncture) and which branches to remove (bad leaders, bad crotches, crossing branches), it WILL be a disaster.

First of all tieing it off is plain stupid. Second of all he should of notched the bottom of the branch.

I just dropped seven trees last weekend, one of them a 50+ foot tall ash. I dropped it right in between my pool and my blueberry bushes.

You aim the notch where you want it to fall and it will.

Former Pittsburgh Steeler Steve Courson was killed in a tree cutting accident...

"In November 2005, he died in an accident at his home in Farmington, Pennsylvania. Courson had been cutting down a 44-foot (13 m) tree on his property, but a gust of wind changed the direction of its fall, and he moved into its path while attempting to prevent his dog from being struck. The dog, a black Labrador retriever, was found alive guarding Courson's body when the tree was removed."

There were 2 different guys in my neighborhood who tried to trim their own trees. One fell off his ladder and had to grab the tree to stop from falling which caused bloody cuts and bruises to his ribs and stomach.

The other used rope to “control” a limb as he cut it. It sailed through a neighbors window as a result.

Now, we all use a guy named Jerry the Tree Trimmer.

Congratulations, you just discovered POTENTIAL ENERGY! So instead of the limb crushing a neighbor’s car, house or something, you discovered that the tie-off line acts like a fulcrum and you are in the arc, obvious in hindsight, no? Sell this video for object lesson on why this should NOT BE a one-man job! Second man should hold tension line on the tree limb. Sympathies and OUCH!

Reminds me of the time when my parents were still alive. My mom called me one day and said “Harry, is in the hospital.” Me: What? what happened —how is he?” Mom: “He was trimming the tree in the patio and fell”
Me: WHAT WAS HE DOING IN THE TREE?

He was 70 years old. Luckily he landed on his feet — didn’t break anything — but... jammed his right femur into the hip bone and was never the same as you can imagine. SHE had told him to trim the tree — it wasn’t his idea.

The tree was either entangled up above or pushed against a building. Take note for the future when trimming a tree.

Bad decision making. He tied off the branch first by a rope. This took away the natural path the branch would have taken due to gravity. All that energy had to go somewhere so it went the only way it could....towards the guy cutting the branch at the base. Never should have tied that sucker off. Or if he had to he should have tied it closer to the base so the rope would be perpendicular to the ground so it would not swing.

Ouch!

Would make a good safety training film, I’d say!

Yeah, there’s things I’ll do with a chain saw and things I won’t do. This sits firmly in the “won’t do” column.

That Liveleak video is actually one of the tamer ones. The site is well known for posting gore. Beheadings, murders, nasty accidents and the like. Not a good site for the squeamish.
