ABC News ran a story earlier today about a blind dachshund in Centralia that paints pictures to raise money for a dog rescue group.
Hallie is a black longhaired dachsund adopted by painter DeeDee Murray in 2001 at a local shelter
In 2010 Hallie suddenly went blind from Sudden Acquired Retinal Degeneration Syndrome (SARDS), an autoimmune disease that attacks the retina.
It came on really fast overnight, she told ABC News affiliate KOMO. It probably happened within 2 or 3 days. She was seeing fine and then suddenly she was walking into walls.
Although veterinarians can restore the sight of some dogs that contract SARDS, Heidi's retinas were detached in several places and treatment couldn't help her regain her sight.
Murray taught Hallie to paint before SARDS struck, and after being depressed for several weeks, Hallie began to paint again.
As you can see in the picture, Hallie wears a litte red beret when she paints. Very cute.
Murray selects paintings to go on Hallie's website, HalliEART, and gives them names like "Swinging Monkey", "Leaky Faucet", and "Nude with Clothes On."
The paintings sell for $40, and all the money they raise goes to Purple Heart Rescue. Each one is a Hallie original complete with her signaure, a rubber stamp print of a dog nose.
If you'd like to get one of Hallie's paintings, you better hurry - 82 of the 86 paintings on the website have already been sold.
You can also purchase a painting this weekend when Hallie will be featured at the fine arts building at the Puyallup Fair.
Hallie's story is an inspiration and an example of how to confront and overcome overwhelming challenges.

... WOOF!
What a wonderful story.
I am ready to adopt an elderly dauchsund from the animal shelter destined to be euthanized. We have three basset hounds, one is also an elderly rescue. I saw her picture online and she looks traumatized.
I just don’t know how hubby will handle coming home from his trip and finding another dog...
Our dogdom is already so fragile and filled with drama with two alpha males, it is a regular Peyton Place.
I’ve had two. In a short time the dachsy will be telling the others what to do. One of mine was a rescue...sweetest dog I ever had.
Favorite Far Side cartoon EVER ! Thanks for posting.
That made my day!
What a pretty girl! I have a very special place in my heart for blind dogs (my Mia is blind) & Doxies, both. VERY powerful & amazing little people.
(Hope this is okay to say) If you are looking for a new Doxie pal & are in Texas, check out Diamond Doxie Rescue of Texas. They are FANTASTIC people.
FYI GG
Say it loud and say it proud, there is no hound like a dachshund!
You get more hound for the pound with a dachshund!
I have two of these canine comedians!
Thanks Daffy, its amazing what animals can overcome, Pepper still surprises me with things she has found a way to deal with being blind. I have to be careful I don’t fall over her in the kitchen all those food smells draw her like a magnet...If I fall over her, I’ll be like that lady in the commercial.......Help, I’ve fallen and I cannot get up...LOL
Sweet animal.
Like
