I know that feeling very well. I rented a U-Haul for a down and out family member and had a similar experience. Real nightmare.

Nightmare is the proper word. Five days of sheer terror. Loss of a great Federal contractor job (immediately, if you are accused of a felony you lose the job THEN), and if a conviction occured -- which my attorney said would be hard to beat, because the judge instructs the jury: "Read the contract. Who's name is on it? Was the car returned? No? Guilty." -- if a conviction occured, try and get a computer programming job with a felony. Not gonna happen.

Through my U-Haul experience I never thought about losing my job, but now that you mention it that is exactly what would have happened (I am a public school teacher). I was just panicking about having to pay for a 25 foot box truck.

Ignorance is bliss -- knowing about the theft charges would have made it much more of a nightmare for me.

The best part of your story is that you're still clean! It's all that really matters.

My son in law made that mistake in a business partnership — rented the company cars for 3 partners and got left holding the bag when the business went belly up and 2 partners declared bankruptcy. My s-i-l bore all of the losses. He worked his way out, but it was painful — very painful. It’s lucky that he married my daughter who is a work-a-holic and who took many jobs to help put them on their feet again.
