(Vanity) Cell phone alerts.

Yesterday here in the People's Republic of MA. a line of thunderstorms came through. Funnel clouds were spotted and the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning. Apparently a lot of people were warned via cell phone. My daughter who works in a restaurant heard quite a few go off at the same time. Since when do alerts come via cell phones? Do you have to sign up for it, or is that standard for newer phones?I have an old non smartphone type.

A person can sign up at weatherchannel.com. Newspapers and radio stations also have sign ups for alerts.

Yes. The links to government alerts aside, everyone who has a weather app get alerts from the national weather service, and everyone who has a smart phone has one weather app or the other. And yes, weather apps whether stand alone or integrated into the clock come preinstalled on every smart phone I know of.

I got one at 00:20 Sunday Morning for a flash flood alert.

It did not even rain here in Texas where I am at.

I disabled it on my Droid, did not have the option to disable the “presidential notification.” What is up with that?

Most colleges and Universities use text alerts, since the Viginia Tech incident, for all emergency situations, weather, safetty, closings, etc.

Because the HMFIC wants to be able to beep you.

He got the stash.

Here in the People's Republic of Kalifornia. I am signed up with my county (Santa Clara) to get emergency alerts as you describe.

The weather channel alerts can also be sent to your home phone. Caution: their ad appears to offer ‘FREE’ alerts - but you will be billed for about $30 a month.

Check with local tv stations websites to see if they have text alerts. You don’t have a iPhone but I use the weather alert app that sends me pop up alerts for tornado warnings, etc. Other words: get a new phone
