The main character in Julia lost her husband
in the Vietnam war.

Route 66 was perhaps the first drama to mention it, but I think it was mentioned earlier than that on What’s My Line?

Check post #37. Although some sharp eyed Freepers have managed to dig up some possible earlier sightings.

As late as 1962, there were only a few hundred American military in South Vietnam. By the end of ‘63 there were at least 15,000 - too many to be trainers and advisors.

I was going to mention Julia. Her husband was a Huey pilot who was shot down, IIRC.

Oh that is easy. It was ‘Combat!’ It was in a bar in England one night, just prior to D-Day, that Saunders mentioned to Hanley that his Thompson was so neat that troops would still be wishing for one in the Vietnam war! (From the classic ‘Eat my Tommy Gun’s lead kraut maggots’ Combat! episode.)

I remember Jethro wanted to join army and Jed was going to buy him a
Tank. Then they test drove a destroyer.

Probably my all time fav show.

Jane Hathaway, first Cougar.

Ellie, first hillbilly Jane Goodall.

The show was nothing if not perfect cultural spoof. And best laugh track ever.

Since baseball has been mentioned, how about Abbot and Costello “Who’s on First.” A classic.
