When I was in college, that same boost was sought by taking various types of prescription speed-often purchased from long-haul truckers who used the stuff, too. The people I know who did those drugs (who didn’t commit suicide by age 30) are seriously screwed up emotionally.

Young athletes use this as well. I have my suspicions a 10 yr old swimmer that did in an effort to beak some records and overheard some high school hockey players talking about it recently.

Of course, I grew up in the 80s when steroids were legal and passed around like candy.

From the article: “If you type ‘How do I get my doctor to prescribe Adderall?’ into Yahoo, you will get tens of millions of hits.”

Duh. That’s because the words “prescribe,” “doctor,” and “Adderall” show up quite a lot on the Web. If you type that exact phrase into Yahoo with the quotation marks around it, however, you get 41 hits. But that doesn’t quite match the hype this article (originally from ABC News) was going for.

I’m so damn tired of seeing this crap called “medication”. There’s nothing remotely medical about ADHD.

Debate all you want about whether kids should get the medication. I can assure you however, that ADHD is very real. And I consider mental illness to be very medical. The worry, care, and frustration that accompanies having a child with ADHD/ODD encompasses almost every waking moment of every day for a parent.

I am a parent of an ADHD/ODD child and three "normal" (at least non-ADHD) kids. I once considered myself a huge skeptic of the entire idea. I was wrong. I was very wrong.

You Do have my sympathy that your child is in the spot they’re in and you are in the spot you’re in because of it.

Brain Scans?

Smoke and Mirrors

Genetics? It’s above. Nothing there. and since there’s Nothing to the genetic ruse then there’s Nothing to the Chemical Brain Imbalance ruse either.

Psychiatric drugs are an option?

No.

Debate all you want? There is Nothing to debate.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Edison

Edison is the fourth most prolific inventor in history, holding 1,093 US patents in his name, as well as many patents in the United Kingdom, France, and Germany.

In school, the young Edison’s mind often wandered, and his teacher, the Reverend Engle, was overheard calling him “addled”. This ended Edison’s three months of official schooling.

Edison would be diagnosed and drugged today in a heartbeat, 1,093 patents.
Medically Sick? Not hardly.

ADHD is not a medical disease and trying to drug it into submission is a horrible mistake.

http://www.ritalindeath.com/

The boy killed by ADHD treatment on that site was diagnosed as having a medical disorder based on a 5 minute pencil twirling trick.

“And I consider mental illness to be very medical.”

So does the nation’s largest patient advocacy group, NAMI.
http://www.nami.org:80/Template.cfm?Section=Major_Foundation_and_Corporate_Support
81% of their financial support if from the makers of mental illness drugs, and the finances of most other support groups, like DBSA, tells a similar story and agenda.

Like I said you do have my sympathy but drugs are not going to fix your child or actually help your child. Follow the money.

Except that for every statistical outlier like the one you cite, there are hundreds who are legitimately helped by medication.

I’m one. I was diagnosed late, at the end of my Sophomore year in high school. I was put on Ritalin, after extensive testing and observation. It made an incredible difference. I went from C and D grades to all A. I was way more attentive in class and much more able to plan and schedule myself. I took 10mg of Ritalin in the morning and 10 at lunch. I am now a successful, well-adjusted senior IT executive.

Oh, and did I mention this was back in the 1980s, long before ADD became “trendy”? It may be overdiagnosed now, but there are still legitimate cases, and the drugs work. I was never “tweaking” when I took it; I reacted to the drug very differently than someone who doesn’t have the condition would.

I’m glad you escaped with a whole skin & life. But that doesn’t justify allowing a pack of lying, they call it Non-Disclosing, pill peddlers to addict Millions of kids to ADHD drugs simply because a top to bottom culture of corruption pervades our medical system and CMS will reimburse them for their pencil twirlings.

http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/adhd/data.html/

“Parents report that approximately 9.5% or 5.4 million children 4-17 years of age have ever been diagnosed with ADHD, as of 2007.

The percentage of children with a parent-reported ADHD diagnosis increased by 22% between 2003 and 2007.

Rates of ADHD diagnosis increased an average of 3% per year from 1997 to 2006 [Read article ] and an average of 5.5% per year from 2003 to 2007. “

SNIP

“As of 2007, parents of 2.7 million youth ages 4-17 years (66.3% of those with a current diagnosis) report that their child was receiving medication treatment for the disorder.”

9.5%? How did we Ever survive the 9.5% before the APA discovered they could make a ton of money discovering that almost 1 in 10 kids are incurable for life with a Non Medical ADHD?

Check what FDA’s Medwatch has had reported to them about Adderal, Ritalin, Concerta.

Sorry, but No Sale.

ADHD is Not a medical condition and Diagnosing it and Drugging it Should be understood and prosecuted as a crime.
