Rodney King was not a wealthy man when he died ... and now his family is asking the public for donations so they can pay for a proper burial for the infamous LAPD beating victim.
Despite the fact King scored a $3.8 million settlement from the City of L.A. after the 1992 incident, King's family tells TMZ ... there is basically no money left over to pay for his funeral costs, which are expected to run north of $22k.
The family has now issued a statement, through their rep, Kali Bowyer, asking people to contribute to a memorial fund established "for those who wish to contribute to the King family."
King's 3 adult daughters, along with other family members, are desperately trying to come up with the cash ... but Bowyer tells us, "They need the money."
King is scheduled to be laid to rest on June 30.
As far as the mystery surrounding Rodney's death, the family says, "[We are] looking forward to a swift investigation into the death of our father, as well as we put our faith in the authorities responsible for handling the matter."

Gee, maybe Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson will chip in a few bucks.
>> Only cost a hundred bucks to incinerate his carcass.
Doesn’t cost a dime to leave him by the side of the road for the buzzards. I don’t think they’re picky so it shouldn’t take long.
I think many prefer cremation. I don’t have have much family, so I wouldn’t expect a big funeral. I will die a humble man.
Hold a pool party for donations.
I heard a while back that he lost most of his money investing in the rap music industry.
Did he not own that house with the pool as a result of his lawsuit vs. the city of L.A.?
Refinance it. Problem solved.
They’re probably encouraged by the bus monitor who got something over $600,000 (last I heard) after the video of her being bullied went viral.
They probably think that by asking for money, they’ll be rolling in the dough.
Seems like if they did not have $22,000 for his funeral, they should not have ordered the services for which they contracted.
Uhhh... he owned a house with a pool big enough to drown in.
That’s right. Cremate the remains and spread them at the corner of Florence and Normandie in South Central.
Boo frickin’ hoo.
I’m guessing that house was mortgaged to the hilt and also, if you’ll pardon use of the term ... “underwater”.
Much like Rodney, the mortgage on the house might have been underwater too.
Rodney needs to maintain the same hip image, no?
Didn’t he own a home? SELL IT
Definitely scammers! 3.2 million gone? I think not.....
LOL You'll never make is as a funeral director.
I'll wager that it not only has zero equity, but is likely WAY UPSIDE down with helocs.
I have no love for Rodney King, and I disapprove of begging for money to cover expenses that should not have been incurred (they can do this funeral much cheaper than $22k.)
That said, the level of venom on this thread is disgusting. I expected FReepers to show a little more class, but maybe it’s just a sign of the times.
