A SUSPICIOUS pipe blockage had Launceston stormwater experts stumped until a remote-controlled camera robot came face to face with the furry culprit.
Launceston City Council engineering development officer Sonia Smith said anyone developing a new subdivision was required to ensure all stormwater pipes were working.
"They do that by conducting a remote video camera survey, and they then send the videos in to us," she said.
But no one expected to find a wombat 10m below the ground, in a cosy stormwater pipe "burrow" in the outer Launceston suburb of St Leonards.
The wombat can be seen on video attempting to retreat as the camera gets closer and closer.
"Sometimes in these videos you see the odd rat or spider; but this is the first time I've seen a wombat," Ms Smith said.
"It's a 300mm pipe, which is the smallest we use; but it appears that it might be a perfect size for a wombat burrow."
The council says the wombat will be "respectfully nudged on to a new burrow" and the access to the pipe will be blocked.
Yep, that’s a wombat. If it was a rat, it would look like Bill Maher.

I had a wombat blocking my bathroom sink, but that new, improved Liquid Plumber unclogged him right away. It’s really great stuff. Works on hair, tissue paper, children’s toys, wombats, armadillos, soap and tooth brushes
So I guess these folks would not be interested in a copy of Will Cuppy’s book “How to Attract the Wombat”.
Sure beats having Red Back spiders lurking in your pipes!
