Which battles should we commemorate and which battles should we not?
A fair question, Perdogg.
D-Day is one of the most important strategic battles in World History, up there with the Battle of Hastings and Thermopylae. It truly changed the course of history.
Just think of the sheer magnitude of men and materiel employed by the Allies: 160,000 troops, 5,000 ships, 800 planes. The Americans that landed at Normandy had trained for two years in preparation for the landing.
Had the landing failed, the Germans would not have had to fight a two-front war. The effect on Allied morale would have been disastrous. It would have taken years to rebuild and re-equip replacements.
Others worth commemorating every year, taken from the following link (http://www.dailypress.com/news/dp-toptenlist.n11,0,3270867.story)
1. The Alamo
2. Yorktown
3. D-Day
4. Gettysburg
5. Pearl Harbor
6. Midway
Just my $.02.
