SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KABC) -- The state Senate has approved a bill that requires red-light cameras to be used for public safety and not for generating revenue from traffic fines.
The measure passed unanimously yesterday and now goes to the assembly. Last year, Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed a similar bill, saying the red-light camera program should be overseen by local officials

Why do you object to this law?
Redlight cameras have nothing to do with safety, they ARE used for nothing more, than to collect money and even cause accidents. If it takes a state law to ban them for the purposes of generating revenue, that is fine.
Redlight cameras have become a revenue generation device. Note that when redlight cameras are implemented, many times the duration of the amber signal is shortened to increase the number of “gotchas”. This I dare say results in a unsafe situation, since it would result in more rear end collisions.
Our city is making a mint on the cameras and they haven’t prevented one accident....and if they say they are...they’re full of baloney....because it’s impossible to know.
Camel under the tent flap, foot in the door. Gotta' get it past the unsuspecting sheeple public first. Then, foot to the floor.
A quick note: a small town here put in camera lights at the Walmart entrance - for "safety" reasons. There had not been a significant amount of accidents at the light, but they sure are raking in the $$ on people running the red light (because everyone knows the light is red for an inordinate amount of time). They could have just changed the light timing, but that wouldn't have let them hand out auto-tickets and generate revenue......
Red light cameras cause more rear end collisions and have been removed by states where their politicians have brains and aren’t Liberal mental cases.
You be right.
What I'm wonderin' is how this bill will be used to whitewash red light cameras and still get the revenue. I suspect it actually may just redirect the entire fine and fees to the state, thus preventing the locals from "getting the revenue".
The CA Rats have NEVER made a law that was as advertised, they always have a corrupt hidden purpose.
It's like saying cops using radar must use it for public safety and not for generating revenue through writing traffic violations. Ok fine, so now when they hand you a $250 ticket you can feel secure that it was for public safety and not for revenue. Now pay the man!
The more tickets they write, the safer we will all be, right?
Ta Da! We have a winner.
