The Montreal Canadiens have tabbed former NHL player Marc Bergevin as its new GM and will introduce him in a Wednesday afternoon press conference at the team's practice facility.

Bergevin, 46, will replace the fired Pierre Gauthier, who was let go near the end of the 2011-12 season, and become the 17th GM in Canadiens history. The Canadiens not only missed the Stanley Cup Playoffs this season, but finished last in the Eastern Conference and No. 28 in the League with a 31-35-16 record.

A Montreal native, Bergevin has spent the past seven seasons in Chicago's front office. This past season, Bergevin was the assistant GM under Stan Bowman.

He was a scout for the Hawks in 2010 when the club defeated the Philadelphia Flyers in six games to win the Stanley Cup. He also served as an assistant coach in Chicago on Joel Quenneville's staff.

Bergevin played 1,191 games as an NHL defenseman from 1984-2004, playing for eight different organizations, including two different stints with the Penguins..

NBC analyst Pierre McGuire was the runner-up for the job. He was on Ottawa radio this morning and said he was informed by Montreal owner Geoff Molson at 7:15 a.m. that he did not get the job.

It's the second consecutive season the Blackhawks have seen their assistant GM land a top position for a Canadian club. The Winnipeg Jets hired Kevin Cheveldayoff for their general manager position following the 2010-11 season.

Sadly, I have to agree with you. I feel like a Pittsburgh Pirate or a Chicago Cubby fan of the north.

Bleu, blanc rouge forever!!!!!!!!!!!

Lived in Quebec as a kid ... every kid that liked hockey (pretty much everyone) was a Montreal Canadian fan. I was partial to the Chicago Black Hawks because I thought they had the coolest uniforms. This was back in the day of Maurice Richard, Boom Boom Geoffrion, Jacques Plante (the first goalie to wear a protective face mask ... his own invention) ... and the Stanley Cup wrapped up by late March early April.

I wonder if former Penguin Bergevin will keep former Penguin Randy Cunneyworth as Habs’ coach?

Cunneyworth took a lot of heat last season because he did not speak French.

agree the Hawks’ red (’home’) sweater is my fave.

they just have to fix these broken Habs, it just won’t do for the most storied and iconic franchise in the league to finish last in the regular season.

practically a requirement for the position.

after the Finals doubtless there will be more candidates floating about in search of work.
