That’s gotta be one of the most squalid cities I’ve ever had the displeasure of seeing. Went looking for gas there while on a cross-country road trip; every single gas station on my GPS was not there anymore—all boarded up. Whole place looks like a bad Kurt Russell post-apocalyptic movie set.

You’re lucky they weren’t there any more. The son of a neighbor of mine (we lived in a small town) went looking for a station back in the 70’s and was murdered putting gas in the car. The son was probably 19 or 20 at the time and had no idea about the place.

Post-apocolyptic describes Gary Indiana in 2002. I was divorcing and made the trip from the horrors of Illinois to the Best Damned State in the Union, Georgia. In the process, I decided to get some gas. I had heard some horror stories about Gary, but I figured, just shoot off a ramp, get gas, and roll back out.

Even right off the expressway, everything was boarded up. Had to drive a little, found one beleagured station. When I got out, I was the only white boy for 10 miles. I was immediately set upon by hordes of zombies trying to sell me "gold", heroin, crack, or their sister/mama. Some had nothing to sell and just begged. I got 2.00 worth just to get the hell out of dodge. Wow.
