Actually, that new paint scheme is what US ships used in WWI or early WWII, called razzle dazzle. But yeah, it doesn’t work for camo at sea when everyone in anything bigger than 20 feet has radar.

Against visual spotting it dose make a ship hard to ID. Remember they are in waters with a lot of ships. If they can avoid getting IDed until they get close this could be an effective measure. That black paint job was just a give away. With a dazzle camo and the big block numbers they are trying to look like an Navy ship.
