The Hunger Games Politics (FR mentioned)

The Hunger Games" is a rarity -- a Hollywood blockbuster that inspires political discourse. Is it a liberal movie? Is it a conservative flick? Is it both? It all depends on who you ask.

An article from the Hollywood Reporter explains how folks can see their own beliefs reflected in the story. For example, people who back the Occupy movement note that the movie and the book it is based upon feature a world divided into rich and poor. The rich are viewed as layabouts and the poor are hard-working and put upon.

Actor Penn Badgley, best known for his work on "Gossip Girl," attended the premiere with girlfriend Zoe Kravitz. Badgley remarked to New York Magazine, "It's the 1 percent (killing the kids)... I think you'd have to be blind to not see that. I was shocked to see all that in there."

-- snip --

Commenters at Free Republic, a message board dedicated to "independent, grass-roots conservatism," argue that the movie is a conservative message. "Those opposing the big-govt are the heros (sp)," one person writes. Another writes, "I would have to say that the books are essentially conservative, whether the author intended them to be or not."

I did a complete title search and didn't see this posted. If it's a duplicate, I apologize.

Personally, I could care less about this movie. I refuse to watch something where the object is to kill 23 other people and be the last standing.

I don’t know about the movies, but the books are great.

The story line of the books concerns the evils of a too powerful central government.

How did you like Sparticus?

The left is using the movie to promote “end hunger” campaigns rather than the tyranny that produces it.

I saw the movie, without reading the book.
I found it interesting, but disturbing.
Also I kept thinking “ after 4 more years of Obama” !!

Hey, that’s very cool, thanks for posting it.

I like it that reporters come here to check out the thoughts of grass-roots conservatives. (And I was on that thread, so now I feel.....almost famous!)

I’m a reading specialist here in “District 12”...I read the series, because my kids were really in to it big time. I loved the books so much I’m hanging a Mockingjay on my log cabin here in the seam...Haven’t seen the movie yet, but Lenny Kravitz as Cinna sounds great...and Woody Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy seems just about right!

... where the object is to kill 23 other people and be the last standing.

"People" may be technically accurate, but the best term to use here is really "kids". The youngest child killed in the first book (and current movie) is only 13. In the movie she first assists in killing another child, and wounding several others (by pointing out a big next of lethal, genetically-engineered wasps to another contestant, who then drops it on them) and is then killed via javelin to the torso.

Now while child-survival scenarios like this can make great literature (Lord of the Flies, for instance), I don't really think that's the case here. This is action-adventure bloodsport marketed to teenagers, with everyone only looking to find "meaning" in it ex post facto, as a way to justify their own desire to read/see it.

One thing that really creeps me out are all the Liberal hand-wringers who are completely outraged by the killing of Trayvon Martin, but were pretty much wetting themselves in glee waiting to see "The Hunger Games" its premiere weekend.

I just ordered all 3 books, since I found out yesterday my niece is reading them.

I like to be fully prepared for those dinner table discussions.
