What's kind of ironical is that the puppy has been seized and put up for adoption. No doubt if the puppy is not adopted then it will be euthanized. At one time such animals would be put into a sealed container and the air would be pumped out. Similar to what happens in the unpressurized cargo hold of an airplane.

Agreed. And I am actually GRATEFUL this judge was using JUDGEMENT - what the name is meant to reflect. Instead of going “by the letter” which gets us in unfair trouble so many times.
I doubt this woman did anything with evil intentions. She’s probably just a dummy, or at least ignorant of what the pup might encounter.
Give her a fine and be done with it.
Would a person who had down’s syndrome be using mentally incapacitated as an excuse to get out of paying a fine/serving time judgment?
Or are you pretending not to know the difference between established, documented mental illness and using mental illness as an excuse to avoid legal consequences for one’s actions?

The bizarre incident occurred last Tuesday. The woman, Stacey Champion, put the Poodle-mix pup into a sealed box for shipping.
She did not tell the postal workers what was inside, but did let them know that the box could make some sounds because it contained a toy robot.
Champion left the post office and a short time later, postal workers became suspicious when the box fell from the counter.
Postal inspectors were contacted so that the contents of the box could be viewed - what they discovered shocked them all.
Inside...a panting puppy.

This woman told the post office that the package contained a robot.
It actually contained a puppy.
Clearly, she is mentally sound enough to lie in an attempt to illegally mail a live animal.
She also told the judge that she put a bottle of water in the box for the dog. I’m guessing that came up in the mental competency hearing - Along with her putting little holes in the box for air, but which she sealed over with tape when she was sealing the package.
The woman knew she was doing something wrong as she lied about what was in the box. She should face charges.
When people purchase baby chicks from hatcheries they are Express Mailed in special boxes. These boxes have filtered air holes and the shippers put food and a source of moisture (usually fruit). The birds usually get to their destination without incident.

Which does not explain her lie. She would only lie about a live animal being a robot if she knew that she could not mail a live animal in that manner.
People lie when they believe they have more to gain from lying than telling the truth.
If she really believed it was a robot, she would never have put a battle of water next to it. Robots don’t need water bottles.
If she knew it was a dog, but didn’t want to pay the necessary cost of shipping a live animal to the buyer, she has a motivation for lying.
Who suggested she believed it was a robot? I don’t think anyone thinks she’s delusional....she’s just mentally incompetent. That’s why putting a bottle of water, which a puppy wouldn’t be able to open, doesn’t make any sense to people who ARE mentally competent. And neither does covering the holes you made with tape.
That is what she told the employees, deliberately lying to them. She is clearly sufficiently competent to realize she was engaging in illegal and immoral behavior since she is sufficiently mentally competent to lie to the postal employees about what she was mailing.
Yes, I re-read the old news. She did not tell the truth.
However, it’s possible she simply wanted an easy, cheap way to send (to whom? anyone ever ask?) the dog and may’ve been dumb enough not to realize what may happen.
Lied or not, I really don’t know that she intended to be cruel to the dog. There are much simpler ways than taking the effort to mail it and paying for it.
If she told the postal worker that the box contained a robot, why wasn’t the bomb squad called?
People who are mentally incompetent, are still capable of lying.
Demonstrating that they are competent enough to understand that they believe they will avoid moral/legal dilemmas by lying rather than by telling the truth in that particular circumstance.
This isn’t a legitimately mentally ill person; this is someone who is trying to avoid the consequences of her actions. A truly mentally ill person who *truly* did not understand that she should not mail a live dog in that matter would have said “a poodle”, “a puppy” or “a dog”. She would have told the truth because she would not conceive of any reason to lie about the contents.
This person understood that she could not mail live animals in that manner. That is why she lied.
I’m sure she did think that mailing the dog that way was more convenient for her. However, she was also apparently aware that one could not mail animals in that manner, hence, the lie.

Yes, but that doesn’t mean she understood why. She may’ve figured they’re just doing something that makes it more expensive. And that there really isn’t much difference between the handling.
Again, to whom was she mailing the dog? Was there a person expecting something? Was it supposed to be a surprise for someone (no, not of the “Fatal Attraction” or “Godfather” type)?
