Both Walgreen’s and Anthem Blue Cross here in California have been notifying members for several months of this change. In fact, Walgreen’s was suggesting that Blue Cross members change insurance carriers so they can keep using Walgreen’s.
That is what I did after Blue Cross stopped offering their Medicare Advantage PPO plan as of 1/1/12, and it its place offering a far less attractive plan which had a monthly premium for the first time of $106 in my county with fewer PPO providers and geographical limits.
In my opinion, Anthem Blue Cross essentially abandoned the Medicare Advantage PPO market but did so in such a way that many of their insureds have yet to realize they now have a far less attractive plan, not even considering the fact that they are having to pay a premium as well.
