I found this article interesting since I have hypothyroidism, relatively low blood pressure, and have for years been told that salt was bad for me. Not exactly the Wall Street Journal as a source, but thought I'd post it just the same.

When my grandmother was in her 80's and living in a nursing home, she asked me to smuggle some salt to her.

As she said, "I'm dying anyway and I can't stand chicken soup without salt."

I still laugh at the image of my hiding the contraband in her night stand, while we congratulated each other on beating "the man."

Animals will travel long distances to get salt. People will eat potato chips etc for the salt despite knowing they make us fat. Does anyone want chips without salt? A Dr I know emphasizes, “water, fiber, salt” as things we need.

In addition, we need the iodine they add to the salt. There is a yahoo group that tells about how important iodine is - here is a link if you are interested.
iodine@yahoogroups.com
There is reason to believe lack of iodine causes more than thyroid problems - also there is evidence regarding breast and prostate health.

I found out about this from freeper spacejunkie (I think it is). If you start looking into this you find out some pretty interesting stuff.

Your grandmother must have been a lovely lady.

I had three heart episodes which put me in the krankenhaus. First time, the no-salt diet drove me nuts. Second and third time I was ready with McD salt packets in my dopp kit. Relief! When I went in for open-heart surgery this year, after seven hours of surgery, NO diet restrictions and they even brought me a beer with supper, go figure!

BTW they `tortured’ newly captured Saddam Hussein by giving him bland food with no salt or condiments. After three weeks, when somebody waved a bag of Doritos at him, Saddam cried out, “I talk! I talk! The nukes are over there, the chemicals are over here! Please, the Doritos!!”

Salt’s well spoken of in the Bible, for goodness’ sake.

Well, you might ask Lot's wife about that...

An egg without salt is like a kiss without a mustache.

Worldwide, iodine deficiency affects about two billion people and is the leading preventable cause of mental retardation.

Gee, it's the liberals who are pushing the low salt diets because they are on them. I guess they aren't getting enough iodine!

Interesting article. I had very low potassium levels this summer. At one point the doctor said my sodium levels were low and told me to eat salty foods, chips, pretzels, etc.

Then my blood pressure went up and they said to eliminate salt. Of course I didn’t and they put me on medication.

Our DIL uses Himalayan salt. Outside of being a pretty pink color I know nothing about it and don’t know where to buy it in AZ. She claims it’s much better for you than the supermarket salt you buy. Anyone here know about it?

Merry CHRISTmas!!!

I can’t say for certain, but the potash salts (KCl) are red in color. it is possible that the salt you describe has a high level of potassium chloride in it.
