Wow. He sure went through H!LL as a child -

"In those uninformed days, his father tried witch doctor treatments to make him grow," Fricke said. "Knowing Karl and his triumph over his early life, you can't help but celebrate the man at a time like this."

He was buried in the backyard, immersed in heated oil until his skin blistered and then attached to a stretching machine at a hospital, all in the attempt to make him become taller. Eventually he was sold by his father at age 9 to a traveling show in Europe, Fricke said."

While I have Oz on DVD I rarely watch it. However, let TCM air it and I’m good for bits and pieces. (The wife just rolls her eyes and goes into the sewing room.)

Best part for me is when the Munchkins all come out and start singing, and I get a particular kick out of those three little toughs from the Lollipop Guild. I understand they recorded their voices, then ran the record at a higher speed to get that distinctive sound.

Whether true or not, Judy Garland claimed on some TV show (Jack Paar?) that some of the larger midgets hit on her. (If they succeeded, it must have been like scaling the Statue of Liberty.)

In the Coen Brothers “O Brother”, there is a scene at a Klan meeting when some guards come in chanting “O EEE O” like in Oz. I nearly fell out of the chair - brilliant.

I read somewhere that Buddy Ebsen (I think) was the original Tin Man, but developed a deathly allergy to the make-up and nearly died, so he was replaced by Ray Bolger(?).

It would have been a shame to have lost Buddy way back then.

Karl lived in Tampa for many years. He lived next door to my friends. Met him several times at social gatherings at their house. Very nice man.

RIP Mr. Slover.
