But I have been saying since the Summer of 2009 that the 2012 election would be most like 1860 - a four-way contest of incompatible visions with war as the likely outcome, since both major visions are now too strong to surrender, and neither can live with the other.
I think Romney has the nomination sewn up. And I think his nomination will be the GOP's suicide note.
Depending on WHEN he is recognized as the nominee, a conservative alternative will certainly emerge. If Mitt locks it up by March, there will be plenty of time to get a real (plausible, I mean) conservative on the ballot.
Whether the Fourth Party will be a Bell-Everett "can't we all just get along" party, recoiling from the thunder over the horizon, or whether it will be a real communist party growing out of OWS is impossible now to say.
Buckle up. It's gonna be a hell of a ride.
