Just a little bit of "dental dysplasia" lent to some Japanese by the x-factor DNA sequence (found among the Chippewa/Ojibway, Yakuts, Fulbe, Berber, Iroquois AND Sa'ami).
Without examining the question further it was probably most prominant among members of the royal and daimyo families primarily descended from the Yakuts invasion in the 6th and 7th centuries. Anything that can suggest you are part of a former or current ruling class is always considered GOOD ~ a veritable beauty spot.
A Swedish study showed 18% of Sa'ami having some dental dysplasia ~ just about the highest level in any group on Earth.

Weird. First they have their teeth crooked, then they get plastic surgery to look Western like Tomiko in the picture below.

So Jewel is really popular there? The Japanese are odd, but you gotta love them, they are, well, they are them...

A dental salon in Tokyos Ginza district has become very popular with girls after it advertised a cosmetic procedure that lengthens and sharpens canines to enhance a feature Japanese call yaeba. Actually, "yaeba" is the cry of pain that Japanese men make when one of those sharp canines comes into play during an act that is known in Japan as a "Rewinsky."

Yaeba means double tooth in Japanese, but it doesnt describe major dental deformities, but rather the vampire-like look obtained when the two molars crowd the canines pushing them forward to create a fang effect.
