Cannon Falls residents grab tickets to see Obama (Minnesota PING!)
Minneapolis StarTribune (aka The Red Star) ^ | 8/14/11 | Nicole Norfleet - Staff Reporter

The small river town of Cannon Falls had to wait 83 years between presidential visits, so it was no surprise that there was pent-up demand for tickets to see the commander-in-chief.

Between 1,300 and 1,500 people -- in a town with a population of 4,000 -- showed up Sunday for a chance to attend Monday's town hall meeting with President Obama.

"I've been doing this for 20 years, [and] I have not seen an event where people were so happy and exhilarated about this opportunity," said Police Chief Jeff McCormick.

Obama will speak at a town hall event at Lower Hannah's Bend Park in a bid to regain momentum as the country's economy continues to stall and potential Republican rivals vie for a shot to replace him. It will be the first stop of his three-day Midwestern bus trip, which also is to include visits to Iowa and Illinois.

The last time a president visited Cannon Falls, about 45 miles south of the Twin Cities in Goodhue County, it was 1928 and the president was Calvin Coolidge.

While Obama will likely address sobering issues, such as the nation's high unemployment rate, many in Cannon Falls said they were excited nonetheless to see a president visit.

Up here in the Twin Cities, the media is all a-flutter over the arrival of "The One" to our state.

From what I could see from watching various news sources, it sounds like many of those seeking tickets were liberal activists from the Twin Cities or Northfield, the latter being a festering sore of liberalism in otherwise GOP-leaning southern Minnesota.

Comments or opinions - anyone?

I’m sorry but I wouldn’t walk across the street to see a Chicago thug. Celebrities don’t impress me all that much.

I read the unemployment in Cannon Falls is about 3%....and that the town generally gives to the Repubs.

I’d bet the bulk of the 1500+ people where from the near by college town. Home of the late Wellstone. Was that Northfield?

I own a business in the northern suburbs. The “won” is getting to close for comfort. He seems to have the touch of death when it comes to visiting businesses.

I will how ever attend a good old Obama Protest while he is in town!

Less than an hour from Minneapolis, and 1,500 is ‘a lot’. I see a new strategy - his bus tour will take him to ‘small town America’.....but the small town will always be near a large metropolitan area, to make it look like the entire town came out to see him.

If Cannon Falls is so hot to trot for the Shyster in Chief, they ought to change their name from Cannon Falls to Cannon Fodder.

Is the Chief near orgasm?

Not surprising.

Fat-assed Union slob “civil servants”, with even fatter pensions and benefit packages, just love Commies who steal from productive Americans to enable their easy life.

Betcha the Chief will have his goon squad on the look-out for any of those tea party troublemakers who might challenge His Kenyanness.

The fact he’s stopping in CANNON Falls is violent, hateful, teaparty type rhetoric.

Cannon Falls is represented by Republican Tim Kelly (Assistant Majority Leader) in the MN House, Republican John Howe in the MN Senate, and Republican John Kline in the U. S. House.

The Carleton-St. Olaf - Twin Cities liberals will undoubtedly make up the bulk of the adoring crowd.
