World Trade Center construction workers drinking on the job
NY Post ^ | Aug 14, 2011 | Heather Haddon

Ground Zero hardhats are hitting the hard stuff at lunch -- guzzling beers and shots at nearby bars before stumbling back to their dangerous jobs on the hallowed site, The Post has learned.

With cost overruns crossing the $2 billion mark and the 10th anniversary of 9/11 approaching, some reckless workers were seen on midday breaks last week filling their bellies with enough booze to become legally drunk.

The men then stumbled back to the site, where workers have reached the 78th floor of 1 World Trade Center as they attempt to build a virtually indestructible skyscraper.

Check out the shirts some of them are wearing. You guessed it: union. This is hilarious and has been going on for quite some time. They are so brazen.

This bar will be empty tomorrow. There is nothing worse for these unions than bad PR.

Their union rep will be really pissed that this article was published.

Heads will roll.

And not union heads.

It's an ongoing union tradition ........ "Chrysler UAW workers caught drinking, smoking pot during lunch – for the third time."

Good point they will have to work/lunch out of a cooler for a while!

“This bar will be empty tomorrow...”

Yes... but another bar will be filled OR their lunch boxes will have some cold, aluminum cans. Just my thoughts!

'snip'

"Their presence didn't surprise the bartender, who greeted them by name in his Irish brogue and refreshed their beers continuously."

Talk about being a regular.

Or the Union rep will tell them to put on different shirt when they go to the bar so they’ll fit in with the Wall Streeters who are downing martinis two at a time.

So, what else is new? Construction workers have traditionally been hard drinkers. I worked construction for a while and every day they drank their lunch and the got totally bombed after work. I couldn’t handle that crap so I quit. Acting as if this is something new is simply silly.

This has been going on at any Iron Worker job site for 50 plus years. Wait until they are getting close to being done, it gets way worse.

You are probably right. To be honest, I don’t know why someone would want to drink during the day. I can completely understand having a beer, wine or drink of choice AFTER work. Who would want to be sleepy the rest of the afternoon?!

As I said in post #1, this has been going on for awhile, but the Post is just catching on. Most people are oblivious to this, however, and it will be big news around here for a couple days.

“With cost overruns crossing the $2 billion mark”

How is that allowed to happen?? The original buildings cost less in 1972 dollars, than this!

I never compared the two. I simply implied that they drink at the same places since the work in close proximity. In all fairness, if you have a bunch of money with a broker you wouldn’t want him tanked on the job. But in my experience, construction workers are much, much worse when it comes to drinking.

Iron workers are a hard drinking crew but they also do scary work. I used to work alongside a bunch of them in my younger bullet-proof days and believe me they need something to steady their nerves. If you run them off for old work habits you'll find few who will and can do the work.
