Interesting analysis. But. There was plenty of lighthearted satire in I Love Lucy and in The Honeymooners. And they could be understood by foreigners who didn't even speak English, as I found out. Monty Python, on the other hand, as good as it might have been, was often heavy handed, and worse, incomprehensible to residents of countries other than England. Compare to Are you being served. My opinion.

I just started watching I Married Joan on one of the channels on my Roku box.

At first, I didn't realize that this show was NBC's counter to CBS's I Love Lucy. From the quality of the recordings, I thought it pre-dated Lucy. I can see some of the bits from Lucy being used on Joan.

Very amusing to watch.

Yet Bilko is ignored in America.

Odd.

I Love Lucy ran on American tv for nearly 50 years; Bilko was in syndication for only a few years. I saw Bilko in rerun as a child. I don’t understand why it wasn’t popular in syndication. It was a huge success in its initial run.

I now belong to a British Bilko appreciation club where the talk is Bilko all day long. Luckily, it is all coming out on dvds.

I also recommend “Car 54, Where Are You?” which was created by the Bilko team. Absolutely hilarious show.
