Special Dispatch No.4169

“Inspire 7 – American Jihadi Samir Khan: ‘A Powerful Media Production is as Hard-Hitting as an Operation in America’”

SNIPPET: “In an article in the seventh issue of Inspire, Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula’s English-language magazine, U.S.-born Samir Khan hails Al-Qaeda’s “media jihad” as a component in the war against the U.S. that is of equal importance to actual attacks on it. Khan asserts that Al-Qaeda has won the preliminary stages of the battle for the hearts and minds of Muslims, thus ensuring that the organization’s ideology will live on. One of the reasons for this victory, he explains, lies in the fact that the West and the media present Al-Qaeda’s ideology as nothing but terrorism, whereas the organization’s creed is that of Islam, a fact that earns it the support of Muslims.

Khan concludes the article by listing the four key elements which enable Al-Qaeda to win the media war: the technological savvy of Al-Qaeda’s media operatives, the U.S.’s failure to respond to Al-Qaeda’s propaganda, the U.S.’s media “blunders” which damage its image in Muslim public opinion, and the general suspicion in which Muslims view the U.S.”

“Former Charlotte man killed in Yemen drone attack”

SNIPPET: “SANAA, Yemen (WBTV) - A Charlotte man who ran the al-Qaida newsletter from Yemen was killed in a drone attack that also took out a prominent cleric Friday.

Khan, from Charlotte, just published a new issue of al-Qaeda’s online magazine earlier this week. WBTV was the first to report about Khan in 2008 and at the time Khan began criticizing WBTV.

In addition to Khan, the U.S. airstrike Friday also killed American-Yemeni cleric Anwar al-Awlaki.

Khan, who was 22-years-old in 2008, was of Pakistani heritage from Charlotte who produced “Inspire,” an English-language Web magazine which spread al-Qaida ideology and promoted attacks against U.S. targets, even running articles on how to put together explosives.

Khan was living in Yemen and his main article in the latest issue dealt with American media.

In an earlier issue, Khan wrote that he had moved to Yemen and joined al-Qaida’s fighters, pledging to “wage jihad for the rest of our lives.””

Breaking News: Awlaki, Samir Khan Reportedly Dead

IPT News
September 30, 2011

American-born al-Qaida cleric Anwar al-Awlaki was killed Friday by a U.S. airstrike in Yemen, administration officials say.

Awlaki, 40, was among the terrorist group’s most charismatic figures, expanding al-Qaida’s violent theology to a new pool of potential recruits by speaking and writing in English. He also was tied to a series of attacks, including the Fort Hood massacre and the attempted bombing of a Detroit-bound airliner on Christmas Day 2009. An Associated Press dispatch calls the strike “the biggest U.S. success in hitting al-Qaida’s leadership since the May killing of Osama bin Laden in Pakistan.”

He was the most visible figure in al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, an al-Qaida affiliate considered the most dangerous and capable of carrying out terrorist attacks.
