Interesting discussion of "bread crumbs," but an unfortunate choice of titles... Hey, astrodudes, people are sick of the constant drumming up of these "threats," however vanishingly unlikely they are. So cut it out, already! Don't you know socialist weasels will seize on every threat, real or imagined, without fail, to take away more of our freedoms? You're not doing yourselves, or humanity, any favors crying wolf all the time... Capice? /soapbox

Elenin? Or something behind it?
We’ll know by October 18th, how close it gets and the effects

Bah, I’ll worry about it when it is going to definitely hit...given the nature of how our current government is trying to destroy America, hell, it might be a good thing.... /s =.=

The sky is falling!
I’m not going to worry over what may or may not happen a decade from now. Just let me know the day ahead of impact so I can finish off the bonbons.

“long-period comets whiz by the sun very infrequently.” Thank goodness. Those comets have big bladders and might put out the sun.

Most likely the comet head has evaporated. There are tens of thousands of telescopes around the world looking for comets.

Sounds like it might be one of the little guy’s friends.

Or it is very far away. It isn’t in sight and “[it] may have last zipped by the sun just a few hundred years ago, or many thousands...”
So I read that to mean it is hundreds or thousands years away form coming back.

Most likely the comet head has evaporated... I guess that means it'll vote Democrat.

For the most part, the astronomical community has been very responsible and subdued about the threat from celestial objects, despite efforts from the popular press to drum up hysteria, like they did for Covid and Global Warming. Astronomy is such a fascinating and difficult enough field of study that it hardly requires lurid press for attention.
