A Boynton Beach man was arrested after apparently needing to satisfy his sweet tooth by stealing a pastry from Walgreens.

According to Boynton Beach police on July 25, 49-year-old James Gomperts stole a packaged danish from the Walgreens located at 1634 S. Federal Highway. The store clerk watched Gomperts select the danish from the food aisle, but a few minutes later it was no longer in his hands. The clerk said she noticed his right front pants pocket bulging.

Gomperts paid for other items and on the way out was approached by store employees about the danish. That is when he fled on his bicycle.

A police chase eventually led to Gomperts fleeing through an alleyway in the 400 block of SE 20th Court. When Gomperts emerged from the alleyway, he crashed into a patrol car following him.

Officers found the danish in Gomperts pocket and arrested him on charges of fleeing and eluding a marked police car, resisting arrest without violence and petit retail theft. He is being held at the Palm Beach County Jail on a $5,000 bond.

The cost of the danish -- $1.39.

Hate it when that happens.

There must be more to this story than they are reporting. He must have a sheet a mile long, $5000.00 bond for a sweet roll seems a tad excessive plus just how much ‘eluding the police’ can you do on a bicycle - I know you can go places the cruiser can’t but I am talking of the enormity of the charge.

I know it is a stretch, but seeing as how he paid for other items, it may have been an oversight, especially if he didn’t have a cart.

OTOH, that bagel bulge was either uncomfortable or maybe it felt good (to him)????

One of the early TV wags had a female reaching in his pocket for something.
She said “I feel so silly”, He said, “Go a little lower and you will feel knutz”.....

Kind of hard to cut things off in live TV with no delay..

Don’t EVER try to get away from the cops when there is a danish or donut at stake!
