Alex Morgan achieves lifetime goal for U.S. soccer

At age 10, Alex Morgan watched on television as the U.S. women beat China to win the 1999 World Cup, the last time this country has won it.

"Just to see the reaction in the United States was amazing," she said. "I didn't totally comprehend what it all meant at the time, but now I get it."

Does she ever.

Morgan was talking Thursday from a bus taking the U.S. team to Frankfurt, Germany, for Sunday's Cup final against Japan. This time, Morgan will be front and center on what for a women's soccer player is the greatest stage in the world.

The former Cal star is well beyond being the team's secret weapon, the late-game sub who can create scoring chances with her speed, energy and smarts. She scored her first World Cup goal Wednesday to clinch a 3-1 victory over a French team that dominated play for long stretches.

Sheesh.

Men are bigger, faster, and stronger than women. Is that supposed to mean girls shouldn't play sports?

Let women's sports find their own level and their own fans. Right now, U.S. women's soccer is among the best in the world. Enjoy it while you can.

LOL.

So if you had a daughter who early demonstrated athletic ability, you would squash it because she’d be playing a chick sport? Would you let her know how second rate she is for playing said sport?

Sorry, as a dad to a Division 1, full scholarship earning daughter, I laugh in your general direction. Oh, and fully employed since she walked out of college in 5 years (injury redshirt season) with both her undergrad and grad degrees.

Congrats.

That said, chick sports are, I apologize in advance, a weak sister to the real thing.

Not bothering me with your commentary at all. I’ve been hearing that kind of drivel for 20 years now (since my daughter started playing sports). Spent plenty of time with dads who got overly involved in their talentless son’s rec council baseball while pretty much ignoring their very talented daughter’s varsity lacrosse team.
