Donated syringes left in school closet
At least four Albuquerque kids in pre-school program were stuck with needles after a box apparently donated for their play turned out to contain syringes, city officials said Wednesday.
The youngsters in the city-run program at Gov. Bent Elementary School all were 5 years old, Chief Administrative Officer for the city of Albuquerque, Rob Perry, said.
Perry said the donated box may have been sitting at the school for about a year.
It is not yet clear if the needles were sterile. Or if there were more than just the two officials recovered.
Both have been sent to the Department of Health for testing. Officials hope to have those results by Thursday.
In total 11 kids were in the summer preschool program. The city will pay for any child from the class to be checked by a doctor. The city will send home a letter tomorrow to parents alerting them to the incident. A full investigation is now being conducted to determined how this happened.
It seems doubtful that even a criminal would donate a box with syringes in it to the school for kids to play with (person who donated would fear being caught). It seems more likely that they were placed in the box at the school.
