I always liked the story I read years ago that to me was the essence of Steve McQueen. There were terrible mudslides around LA and a number of famous peoples houses were threatened. Hollywood held a benefit for the cleanup, and McQueen showed up on a dozer to do the work himself.

Schveet. I love it. I can’t drive one of those beasties, so anybody who knows which lever to pull gets a thumbs-up from me.

I was living in L.A. when I saw a news story featuring McQueen. There were mudslides threatening expensive homes in the hills. One of the homes was his. I believe it was in Mandeville Canyon. The reporter was interviewing him amidst the chaos while workers were trying to prevent further damage. It was still raining. He broke off the interview to direct workers out of the way to enable a bulldozer to move up the street. He was a take-charge kind of guy, and was right in the thick of the action.
