I was surprised to find out that McQueen was a conservative. He flashed a peace sign in his DUI mug shot.

Shooting the peace sign is something that everyone does, it is just a smart aleck thing or retro thing to do sometimes, it was like that even in the 60s when it had many meanings and uses.

While i am reluctant to admit it, me and my brother plowed a few corn fields with a dune buggy we made.

That thing was a tank. LoL

Steve was also a very accomplished motorcycle racer. To see him at play watch the motorcycle racing movie On Any Sunday.

“That guy was cool.”

There was actually a thread once, I don’t know if it was totally original (ie: Vanity) or if it was a poll taken from somewhere else. The subject was “who is the coolest...” I think it was just actors. With VERY COOL shots of each person.

After careful consideration, and consultation/confirmation from hubby, of course I voted for Steve McQueen.

I don’t know if he won.

But no matter what, there is no doubt in my mind that Steve McQueen is the “coolest” guy who ever lived.

I think the only other person who can come close to him in total coolness is James Dean.

Yes! Remember Nixon was always flashing it? But, according to my dyed-in-the-wool Republican dad Nixon was really showing “V” for Victory.

The first person I remember shooting the peace sign was Winston Churchill, hardly a liberal. In his case it meant V for victory.

In the early 50’s Dave Garroway on the Today Show used the sign and said peace to close the show. Maybe that is the origin of it being called a peace sign.

So... prompted by this thread I went and wikied both Steve McQueen and Chuck Conners, very interesting reading for both fellows.

Both Republican supporting guys, so how good is that?

Thanks again for this thread!

Bullitt and the Getaway for me.

And don’t forget about The Magificent Seven.

LeMans - Blue Porsches and red Ferraris battling it out. And, oh, that sweet exhaust rumble.
The Sand Pebbles - Tremendous movie. The story of a man who loved machines living in a time and place of extreme human behavior. I see it as a Cold War allegory. McQueen’s last sentence in the movie is telling.
