I was living in L.A. when I saw a news story featuring McQueen. There were mudslides threatening expensive homes in the hills. One of the homes was his. I believe it was in Mandeville Canyon. The reporter was interviewing him amidst the chaos while workers were trying to prevent further damage. It was still raining. He broke off the interview to direct workers out of the way to enable a bulldozer to move up the street. He was a take-charge kind of guy, and was right in the thick of the action.
And..”The War Lover”.. B-17 pilot...Robert Wagner is his co-pilot.

Monterey looks like a terrific line up.
A very good movie. One aspect of it is showing McQueens 'restrained' side of his acting muse. I personally think he was still developing his on-screen persona at that time. He was a lone wolf with his own agenda; aloof and distant from his fellow pilots...and the woman.
A good movie on several levels. Rare today.
