Web site exposes bad tippers in Brooklyn

Brooklyn food deliveryman Larry Fox, 20, received a $3 gratuity last month after delivering an $89 lunch order to the wardrobe department of the CBS show "The Good Wife." It was the tip that broke the cyclist's back.

The grub-runner, who has worked for Mexican restaurants and upscale delis in Williamsburg and Greenpoint, launched a Web site called "15 Percent" (15percent.tumblr.com), where he posted receipts, names and addresses in an attempt to "out" the neighborhood's worst tippers.

"It started as a public shaming, to call people out who were bad tippers," said Fox, who is paid $50 for an eight-hour shift, and relies on tips to pay his rent. "It's extremely insulting to get handed one dollar on a $50 order you're delivering. People in new condo buildings tip the worst."

The host site, Tumblr, forced Fox to remove customers' personal information from the site, he said, but Fox said he still posts enough information so bad tippers know they've been exposed.

Yay! Having (many decades ago) worked my way through way to many years of college as a restaurant worker, I’m all for shaming bad tippers.

Americans should go to Europe if they want to know what service is like when tips are included in the final bill.

Bad tippers drive me nuts. If you don’t want to pay for service, get it yourself. We went out to eat the other day and next to us was a table of older people who had the waitress coming over every few minutes about something. When they left, they left a pile of change on the table.

We always tip around 25% just to try to make up for the jerks who don’t.

Now just a minute. Many people get $50 for an eight-hour shift and those people don't expect a tip for doing their jobs. What makes him so special that he demands extra for doing his job? If he can't make the rent, then move. If he doesn't like the pay, then get another job and quit whining.

What's his problem with the $3 tip? It takes just as long to deliver a $5 order as it does to deliver an $89 order. Maybe he's a jerk and his customers are sending him a message. Tips originally were for service over and beyond the expected. Now days it's demanded no matter how crappy the service is.

If I’m not happy with the meal, or the service sucks, I’ll NOT tip accordingly, and I don’t give a big damn who knows about it.

Sounds like typical class warfare garbage to me. Maybe I should be exposed for denying tips by not eating at restaurants.

Most people like this job’s pay based mostly on tips or tips alone. It is one of those areas where the consumer can set the price for the service, however, some take advantage of it to get the free or really cheap service. IE, he doesn’t get $50 an hour + tips, he probably just gets tips.

Wonder if he’s paying taxes on his tips.

I’m tired of hearing about bad tippers. I tip pretty well, and I’ve seen staff manuavering to work my table. However, what part of ‘gift’ do staff fail to understand? Take the entitled attitude with me, and a waiter will get the insulting amount.

Also, the staff I appreciate the most are those who are all business. It seems like most these days want to be your friend before they even take your drink order.

“If I’m not happy with the meal, or the service sucks, I’ll NOT tip accordingly”.

The server (waiter or waitress) and the cook/chef are two different job titles. One really doesn’t have anything to do with the other. If I have an issue with the food, I will send it back. I think I have NOT tipped twice in my life. Both times, we had a waitress who was beyond insulting and rude. I will say that it is a very rare occurrence.

Tips put on the credit card are not making it to the waiters and delivery guys. Obvious.

Obvious solution. No tip on card. Tip in cash. Obvious problem, who carries a lot of cash?

Obvious solution: tell tipee to ak his boss wtf is going on with the tip money put on cards... and stop the whining.

That’s a good idea. Call out and embarrass your employer’s customers. Maybe if you piss em off enough, they’ll take their business elsewhere. Why not take it one step further, form a union and break the legs of those bad tippers.

I wouldn’t hesitate to call the owner and tell them that their employee cost the company business and I’d make sure he knows I’m telling everyone I know.

I am getting so sick of these ungrateful whiners who complain about bad tips. It happens. Learn to deal. If someone doesn't like it, then get a different job.

These kinds of websites make me NOT want to go out to a restaurant where tipping is part of the bill. Maybe these customers who see themselves being "shamed" like this should also take their business elsewhere. If this guy has so many bad tipping experiences, then maybe the problem is that he is doing a lousy job and thus merits a crappy tip.

My gf father always said you can tell what a man is like in how he treats and tips a waiter or waitress.

Yesterday, I went to a “Big Boy” for breakfast alone. The hostess or “Greeter” as the sign says took me to a booth. She was a average looking girl in early 20’s. I asked if she planned to waitress for the rest of her life. She responded that she had only 1 year to go in college for her degree. “What major?”, I asked. “Social work”, she replied. Told her to have a back up plan since most social workers are paid by state and local government. And they are starting to do some major down scaling. “Oh No” she replied. “There are more job openings than people interested in the profession.”

I told her I would have the buffet. Having the buffet typically reduces the amount of work the waitress performs and consequently receives a small tip. Typically I tip 20% for good service or 25% for excellent service. (I have a widowed daughter who “waits” tables.

Analyzing the conversation we had, I asked one additional question when she brought the bill. You voted for Obama, didn’t you? “Oh yes” she said. Wasn’t it great what he did about bin Laden? I told her “NO”, he was just following along with Bush’s plan.

After I paid my $10.32 tab, I approached her, held out my hand and said I planned to give you a $2.50 tip, but “You voted for Obama’s Hope and Change. Well here’s your change. $0.68. Her chin dropped to the floor. I turned and walked away. When I got home, I related the story to my wife. Now I’m the biggest A**hole on the planet. But I had to say it. Having done it once now makes it easier to do it again. Give it a try.

I’ve never really fully understood the concept of tipping. If I go out to eat and the service is bad then I won’t frequent that establishment in the future. It seems to me it’s incumbent upon the business to insure I get good service if they want my continued business. Just like they don’t want to serve bad food, why would they serve up a bad waiter?

Now there will probably some “equalization of gratuitous opportunity” legislation introduced to protect oppressed servers against people like you.
