The military team that killed Osama Bin Laden is an elite special forces group unofficially called Seal Team 6.
Officially, the team's name is classified and not available to the public, technically there is no team 6. A Tier-One counter-terrorism force similar to the Army's elusive Delta group, Team 6's mission rarely make it to paper much less the newspaper.
It shows how important the publicity about Bin Laden's killing is to the U.S. that this morning, Team 6 is front pages news.
The members of Team 6 are all "black" operatives. They exist outside military protocol, engage in operations that are at the highest level of classification and often outside the boundaries of international law. To maintain plausible deniability in case they are caught, records of black operations are rarely, if ever, kept.
The development of SEAL Team 6 was in direct response to the 1980 attempt to rescue the American hostages held in Iran. The mission was a terrific failure that fell apart at many points and illustrated the need for a dedicated counter-terrorist team capable of operating with the utmost secrecy.
The Team was labeled 6 at the time to confuse Soviet intelligence about the number of SEAL teams in operation at the time. There were only two others.
Team 6 poached the top operatives from other SEAL units and trained them even more intensely from there. Even among proven SEAL's the attrition rate for Team 6 is reported to be nearly half.
There are no names available for current Team 6 members, but the CIA does recruit heavily from their numbers for their Special Operations Group, so it makes sense that they were chosen to work with the CIA on this mission.

Why do we only hear about the SEALs taking part in these operations. Why not the army’s DELTA? Different capabilities or what? Perhaps some ex-military can enlighten us.
Richard was in my Air Command and Staff College class along with Richard Myers. Lived on base in the quarters and had a baby grand piano in his room. Partied hard. I watched him pick up a small female reporter and put a leg on each of his shoulders...facing backwards at one party.

Don’t really WANT to be a “Doubting Thomas” but several questions persist. Bury him at sea; O.K., but why the rush? Also, whenever DNA evidence is taken from a crime scene or from a suspect, we’re told that it will be two weeks before we get the DNA reports back.....in New York City or some other metropolis. But in THIS case, out in the godforsaken desert of Pakistan, the exact place the tube will be inserted if they ever give Earth an enema; the tests take less than ONE DAY! Ri-i-i-i-ight!
The key here is that the military MUST go along with whatever Dear Leader says. We recently saw all restraints removed from gays in the military; to the extent that any refusal or rebuff of the advances of a gay upon a straight will be regarded as a HATE CRIME! And there was not a whimper from the military. They are FORBIDDEN to comment. What is to stop Dear Leader from seeking to boost his plummeting poll numbers by announcing a cock and bull story..........in which HE takes credit for every aspect of the success of it, I might add? I ain’t buying it any more than I buy last week’s cobbled-up Long Form CLB!
The word is that it was done in order to comply with Islamic tradition that he be "buried" within 24 hours. Were I in charge, this would have been the first of many violations of "Islamic tradition" that would have taken place.
Why the rush? Decisive action wins. Dithering and awaiting committee approval loses. Read the rules of engagement, and use them to your advantage - but move fast.

I don’t think that it is a good idea to identify or try to identify the team that accomplished this execution. Petraeus would not approve of Obama identifying them and I don’t think that we should either.
