Except, this is all your supposition with no evidence that that is really how it worked in Hawaii back then. I question some things about this BC, but not that, since others have posted examples where Hawaii recorded other wacky things in the race box, such as one that simply said “American”.
Remember, we’re talking about Hawaii, not Alabama. It’s been a racially mixed and racially liberal place for a long time, so it doesn’t surprise me at all that they would not be sticklers about that there.
