I would keep the child off the trail unless accompanied by others. Coyotes are opportunistic hunters. They will go after small kids and dogs. We have them here in the burbs in Atlanta. Had one take a run at our Chihuahua one night. I had to pick her up and the fiancee’ brandishing a maglight at it. It showed very little fear. Saw one the other day standing by the side of the road near our house looking both ways getting ready to cross Lawrenceville Highway in broad daylight.
A can of wasp spray, sprays 30 feet and if sprayed in the eyes blinds the attackers. A human can get treatment by a doctor to restore sight after you beat the crap oit him.
Reminds of a conversation I had only yesterday. I was told of a hiker who was walking in the Angeles Crest Mountains and was stalked by a Momma Mountain Lion and her cubs. His friend had been hiking with two other men. His two friends went ahead only briefly to site a camp location to fish and the Lion chose that moment to attack.
The only thing that saved him was that he heard a twig crack (rare) and he turned just in time to throw the animal's leap off just a bit. It was aiming for his neck. Armed with only a fishing pole, he began screaming at the mountain lion and swing the pole wildly. The animal hesitated, holding its ground. Hearing the noise, his friends ran back to see their friend. That is when the Mother Lion took off with its cubs.
They said that they found evidence that they were being stalked for some time.
She is a young adult, just not very big. I warned her the coyote was after her puppy.
I don’t know how close one would have to be for pepper spray to be effective, but DP says there is a spray with a long range you can get.
I’ve told her not to walk that trail again until she’s armed with something. I think she might listen to me on this.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions... I’ll pass them on.
I should mention that at least here in Michigan coyotes are in every county, and have been found in the city of Detroit. They can live anywhere, and people usually don't see them. That's how good they are adapting. They are like big raccoons.
A bounty on the coyote. Then they will fear man.
Side note: The nylon belt sheath that comes with the Streamlight PT-1L flashlight makes a perfect mag holster for small single stack .380 mags like the LCP and S&W BG380 use.
Cities too. They have been found in Chicago, New York, and Detroit, and I'm not referring to illegal smugglers either.
See reply # 62 above wasp spray. I am thinking about carrying some with me when I walk our dog. I’ve seen them in broad daylight. I saw one on the way to work today, but that was 515 AM.
Coyotes are still nearly always afraid of humans and they generally do not grow very large. Don’t worry too much.
Buy a good mace spray at any hunting store.
One of my GSD's hates coyotes with a passion. He likes all the dogs in the neighborhood but he's messed a few coyotes up bad in the past couple of years.
Here he is... he's the big one.
She'll think that coyote was warm and fuzzy if she's confronted by one of the aggressive feral hogs that are running rampant throughout D/FW and all of Texas.
Sorry Fawn, in many places (particularly in the Northeast), coyotes are expanding their range into places that have been suburbs for many decades.
In the 1990s, several packs coyotes moved into Central Park in Manhatten. Are you suggesting that Manhatten had suddenly moved into coyote ranges?
Coyotes are fine balance for the environment where they are needed, but just like the whitetail deer, there has been an explosion of growth of coyotes in the U.S. in the last 30 years.
People need to be aware of the wildlife around them and how to make sure that both people and critters understand the boundries of what is safe.
Time to upgrade to Irish Wolfhound because you would have seen the opposite result.
I have two GSDs. I love those hunds.
‘yotes and yoots I bet are related!
She comes back when I call, but she just about laid fang into one, he had to scooch his buttocks out of the way of her snapping jaws at a full run!!!!
Coyote had a confused look of “OMFG!!! WTH???” as he looked back over his shoulder at 90 lbs of oncoming ferocity!
I carry this one when I walk my goldens.
Regardless of one's individual tastes, the best defense against a coyote, or any other wildlife, (or a criminal for that matter) is the one that you can employ effectively and confidently. If you daughter is jogging or walking alone (or with her dog), then she SHOULD take a good defensive handgun course and get a CHL and always carry her concealed handgun.
