My daughter encountered a coyote while walking her four month old Golden Retriever puppy yesterday.
She was walking on a trail near her home by Grapevine Lake. She was unable to scare the coyote by yelling and had to call for assistance from another hiker.
She is small and her puppy is small.
What's a good defense against a coyote?
Never too young to learn...
.380, according to Rick Perry --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
slingshot or a wrist rocket and a pocket full of grape sized stones.
Yup, that’ll do it.
Pepper Spray
Yeah, my daughter-in-law carries because she walks her dog in the Davis Mountains, but I never thought my daughter would encounter one right by a city in Grapevine, Texas.
Don’t know if she would consider a gun or not. But thanks.
Not sure how old your daughter is, but I would recommend she get her concealed handgun license and arm herself. Good insurance for 2-legged critters too.
At the very least, maybe carry a walking stick?
Mace, and/or cane.
I second the pepper spray. But the better solution is to get rid of the coyote permanently.
It all depends. Are you willing to take the chance of her coming home with half a puppy?

I could just hear him going, "Adios, MoFo" as he pulled the trigger.
Coyotes show very little fear in areas where they are not hunted. They will attack dogs and humans (particularly children) if given the opportunity. They also can operate in packs, magnifying the danger.
If I were in an area where coyotes area bold enough to approach humans, I would carry a firearm.
Did the .380 actually manage to kill the coyote or just scare it off?
Shoot, shovel and shut-up.
Wasp spray much better range and more accurate
