Man pays off credit card with pennies

MIRA MESA, Calif.- A California man upset with his bank for disallowing his requested refinance said he decided to pay off his $6,500 credit card bill entirely with pennies.

Thierry Cahez of San Diego County rolled 650,000 pennies in plastic, loaded them into crates and drove the lot to his Mira Mesa bank, KABC-TV, Los Angeles, reported.

Cahez was turned away by the bank several times but eventually was sent to a branch with a vault large enough to handle the coins.

Cahez said he opted to pay his credit card bill with pennies because he was turned down for a refinance and for the amount of charges and fees on his credit card, KABC-TV said Tuesday.

If any of those pennies were the old copper ones he overpaid his credit card. The copper content is worth more than one cent.

Chase sucks. My wife was one day late, called them to apologize and fix it over the phone. We had never been late before. They jacked our interest rate by 15% and pretty much told her “tough”. So we paid it off and will never do business with Chase. I encourage everyone to drop Chase. That is the only way they will learn that we are the customers and without us they are out of a job.

I don’t think he’s an idiot. Those coins are US legal tender. If he wants to protest his bank, he has every right, and he did it in a legal and clever way. Not very original, since I’ve seen people do with tolls, but it’s an effective way to send a message.

You are correct, Chase is the worst but consider yourself lucky with the 15%...they jacked mine up to 29.99% and I am done with them now.

Chase does suck!

We were never late on our card and always paid hundreds if not thousands more than the minimum. I booked a vacation, couple thousand dollars, using the card and then had my rate jacked up to 20%+. I called Chase and asked them why they jacked up my rate and was told that it was because I was now a higher risk since I now had a higher balance. We paid off the card and closed the account in person. The poor Chase representative knew we weren’t happy.

Now we use a low interest no annual fee BOA VISA card but we never carry a balance. We get lots of cash back. Make your money work for you!

The New York and California national banks are absolute snakes... how they treat their CC customers doesn’t remotely begin to cover their malfeasance.

I’ve been dealing with Chase since they took over our mortgage and they are complete bastards. Every time we get close to a deal, a new person takes over and we have to start all over again.

Not long. Take money in bills to bank, request penny rolls, turn around and use them to pay the charges.

The right to protest is our most basic freedom. Freedom isn’t always convenient.

He has every right to protest his bank, and other people have every right to point out that if he’d put as much effort into not running up a huge bill as he put into “creatively” paying it he’d have never had any reason to protest them in the first place.
