People in America have more reason to be concerned about this than fantasies about potential nuclear fallout in America. This actually will hit us.
What happens if Japan cannot buy our debt anymore?

You’re exactly right. Most Americans have their heads up their a$$es and are in for a shock. It’s unbeleivable how most Americans have no clue. Well, they’re about to find out and I won’t have much or any sympathy for them. They’re like fat, spoiled brats.
Spot on. This will have ripple effects far beyond Japan’s shores.
State-run media says never let a crisis go to waste.
They are now telling us that the earthquake and tsunami and tens of thousands of deaths were caused by nuclear power plants, and we must believe.
Yes, the Japanese economy will take a hit - but Sony, Toshiba, Kyocera, etc... - all their world class companies will stay in business.
I choose to remain positive.
They’ll sell American treasury bonds that they own to save themselves. Can’t really blame them for it. They’re going to need as much cash as they can get their hands on.
I just begin to wonder what more can go wrong. This is mind numbing.
Those poor people.
The Japanese can't even buy their own debt.
Garde la Foi, mes amis! Nous nous sommes les sauveurs de la République! Maintenant et Toujours!
(Keep the Faith, my friends! We are the saviors of the Republic! Now and Forever!)
LonePalm, le Républicain du verre cassé (The Broken Glass Republican)
That has already started, according to what I have read.
Like Creek said..they’ll sell off. Making the Fed buy that debt since nobody else will buy it. Then they will order the Treasury to print them 100s out like NY Times newspapers..and about as worth as much I might add.
Then..it aint over. The Chinese might get worried that since the dollar is getting worthless, they might start to sell to at least retain some worth. It could get to be a panic run on the dollar.
And believe this..we havent anyone to turn to.
They're the 2nd or 3rd largest holder of US Government debt depending on when you look. They're going to start selling it off rather quickly now I think.
I got an email from Canon telling me that if I had any equipment on order I may not get it for quite some while. More interesting was the fact that they said reimbursement may take some time as well.
I don’t have any orders I’m waiting on but it is an early indicator of how we may be impacted by the disaster there.
This is a huge buying opportunity. Looking at a 30 yr chart, this is as close as a person is going to get to a generational low. Also, the US and most developed markets right now, need a 15-20% mid cycle correction, so moving equity dollars to Japan could be a great strategic move. Doesn’t hurt that most market fundamentals clearly point to Japan as the most undervalued developed economy.
I have read that Japan is very tight fisted when it comes to stimulus spending, but they cannot ignore this. The rebuilding and infrastructure spending is going to equate to the largest spending spree that country has ever undertaken. On real currency values it is probably only 2nd or 3rd in Japanese history. If anyone can shed more light about how Japanese govt spending works, and doesn’t, along with direct insight into Japan’s stock market, I’d really like to hear about it.
People dont understand..Japans debt to GDP is at about 200%
How that country has survived this long is a wonder.
In short, they have no place to go or do but sell off those US Treasuries.
Unless..we get an agreement to do a type of lend lease/trade for services rendered. You know..work it off.
Bartering on a huge scale?
I understand that Japan has been trying the stimulus type spending that this ignoramus idiot in the WH has done.
And it has them at about 200% debt to GDP.
Yes. They pretty much spent the 1990s on one stimulus project after another.
