Finns run for iodine after blasts at Japanese nuclear plant

Concerns about possible radiation from Japan's earthquake-damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant sparked a weekend run on iodine tablets as far away as Finland, the country's largest pharmacy chain said Monday.

"On Saturday there was a run on iodine, but the situation calmed down and we were able to replenish the stock on Sunday," Yliopiston Apteekki spokesman Jari Kokkonen told AFP.

Kokkonen said that some of their pharmacies in central Finnish cities like Tampere and Jyvaeskylae ran out of iodine completely on Saturday. He believes the run on iodine was mostly due to people flying to Japan or the region, adding that many travellers had called the company's hotline for advice.

Finland's radiation and nuclear safety authority STUK said in a statement there was no chance the danger in Japan would lead to people in Finland needing to take iodine.

"Iodine tablets should not be taken without recommendations from officials, because the risk of side effects is greater than the possible benefit," the authority warned. In neighbouring Sweden, a spokeswoman for the largest pharmacy chain, state-owned Apoteket, told AFP many worried customers asked about iodine over the weekend, but that the chain did not sell more tablets than usual.

The Fukushima 1 plant was hit by two explosions at buildings housing two reactors since a massive 8.9-magnitude earthquake hit Japan Friday, and the cooling system at a third reactor stopped working Monday.

How real is the danger? We’re in California, and the winds blow right to us in the Bay Area.

My husband is thinking we may need a contingency plan with our kids. He’s thinking if it gets bad I should pack up our kids and head to my mom’s in Dallas.

Just don’t know what to think. Don’t like that I feel like I can’t trust the news or the govt.

CVS has them here in U.S.ofA. Online anyway. 14 pills=$9.99. Plus shipping. I keep a few around. Not for this Japan thing, but in case New Madrid takes out a nuke plant or 3 in Illinois.

Yeah people jump to conclusions. My cousin watched so much CNN this weekend he took it and he lives on the east coast of USA! His tongue is still tinted dark red.

Water levels dropped precipitously at another reactor, completely exposing the fuel rods and raising the threat of a meltdown.

In the event of a meltdown, highly radioactive material would be blasted high into the atmosphere.
At about 30,000ft the powerful jet stream winds could pick up this debris and carry it across the pacific.(The jet stream is not surface level prevailing winds)
At an average speed of 50mph nuclear material could cross the west coast of America within 4 days.
The most vulnerable to atmospheric pollution are the fruit and wine producing regions of California.
Further east lie the great plain, America’s main grain producing area.

His tongue is red because your cousin took Tincture of Iodine instead of Potassium Iodide. I wish him well...

I ate seven pounds of iodized salt, just to be safe.

Oh good lord, are you serious?

I keep a stash of Iosat, but I certainly wouldn't take any of them at this point. I am about 60 miles downwind from a nuke facility, but honestly, I am more concerned about a terrorist attack than the power plant...and I sure as heck am not concerned about the Japanese nuke problems. Now if the thing blows up and starts burning and throwing ash into the air, I would be concerned. But that won't happen...because their reactor wasn't designed by Soviets.

Wasn't the chain-reaction stopped immediately after the quake and what is going on now is the problem they are having with cooling the core down where secondary radiation is an issue?

You can use colloidal iodine as a daily suppliment. (increase dosage for radiation detected)

I live in northern CT.

Vermont Yankee is about 70 miles away
Millstone is about 60 miles away
Pilgrim Station is about 90 miles away
Indian Point is about 110 miles away
Seabrook is about 100 miles away

I’m not worried that any of these will turn into a Chernobyl, they have been around since the 60s or 70s and none have melted down or and any major issues that I am aware of.

ummm - Japan ia what, about 16,000 miles from California.

That's a pretty far distance, I'm thinking, for any great concentration of harmful particles>

Anyone know?

Course, I'm on the Atlantic, about as far away from Japan as one can get and still be on planet earth - but I would like to know about California and how far inland there could be a problem, from someone who knows. I do have family there and SO MUCH of our food comes from there

"Alfalfa and Sea Dulse"

I use kelp powder like salt for lots of my cooking: stir-fries, soups, home fries, salads, salad dressing, stews, etc. You can also get the Dulce in ‘shaker’ form.

I use iodine - paint a “silver dollar” circle on my abdomen or throat and wait to see how soon it disappears. If within, say 2 hours, I do it every day until it takes several hours - which, I've read, is an indication that the body doesn't need any more for a bit.

I do the above to make up for our iodine depleted foods.

I wonder if my regular regimen would help to protect me against fall out? (I'm too far away to worry about Japan, but I am curious)

16,000 miles

OOPS

I was thinking - and guesstimating - about 6,000 - typo.

It's actually a bit less than 6,000

My Wife took it a year for a thyroid problem.

I believe the site I posted said you could up the dose *temporarily* for radiation exposure. (only for radioactive iodine expo)
