MANTUA - February 24, 2011 (WPVI) -- The Philadelphia Police Department is apologizing after a case of mistaken identity ended with man's dog being shot by an officer Wednesday night.

Neighbors in the Mantua section of West Philadelphia had asked the police force to come out to 42nd & Pennsgrove to shut down a busy crack house that was operating on that block.

The narcotic task force was out Wednesday night, but when the police moved in to arrest the accused dealer, a tragic mistake occurred.

"Obviously a mistake was made, and we are definitely acknowledging that," said Lt. Ray Evers of the Philadelphia Police.

The police department spokesman spoke on the tragedy Wednesday night in the 4200 block of Pennsgrove Street where the pit bull mix belonging to the owner of 4213 was shot to death by police in a case of mistaken identity.

Police had been watching 4211 after neighbor complaints of drug sales, when the suspect came out on the doorstep of 4211; an order was given to take him. But when uniformed officers converged, the suspect had already gone back inside.

Not a "mistake". The cop DELIBERATELY went to the wrong house, and shot a dog that was RIGHTEOUSLY defending his master.

Fine. Now if the cop who killed this dog has one of his own order him to appear at the PD range with his dog and his family. The owner of the dead pet gets to kill the cops dog in front of his entire family.

Then fire the cop. Then prosecute him.

A cop who kills my Lab will have shot his last dog...or anything else.

“Oh joy, I finally get to ambush and intimidate a citizen! And KILL something!”

What’s sad is how I almost want to thank the spokesman for the rare acknowledgement of police fault, and the possibility at least of some financial compensation to the dog’s owner.

In before .... wait .... even the badge lickers and dog haters don't defend this crap anymore. I think that may be significant.

Cops just shoot dogs now. Deal with it. /sarc

If a regular citizen ‘accidentally’ shot a police dog they’d be charged with murder of a ‘police officer’.

Cops shoot your dog, too effing bad for you. Oops. Cops decide to punt your cat across the room, you better thank them they didn’t kick your ass.

The bad apples in the PD’s need to be kicked out. Thugs with badges.
