Ring the kettle bell. School's back in.
LA Times ^ | October 11, 2010 | James S. Fell

I don't know much about proper kettle bell techniques. Neither does Jillian Michaels.

I have an internationally respected fitness certification and 17 years' experience with free weights, yet I lack the audacity to pretend I am qualified to teach kettle bells.

Jillian Michaels, on the other hand, is lacking in shame. At least that's what I thought until I realized Michaels is not actually a real fitness trainer — she's an actress playing the role of fitness trainer on TV and in a line of popular DVDs.

It's analogous to Jesse Ventura's choice of a Gatling-style minigun to mow down guerrillas in the 1987 movie "Predator." Most viewers thought it was way cool, but real soldiers shook their heads in disbelief that anyone would schlep such an ungainly weapon through the jungle.

Same thing with Jillian Michaels. Typical viewers think she's great, yet the collective jaws of professional trainers hit the floor after witnessing her regular displays of poor technique and unsafe training practices.

Yeah, Except Jessie Ventura (Jim Janos) graduated BUD/S in the Navy and went to Vietnam as a warrior.

Correct Myself,

Ventura was born James George Janos in Minneapolis, the son of Bernice Martha (née Lenz) and George William Janos. His father’s parents were from what is today Slovakia, and his mother was of German descent.[2] Ventura has described himself as Slovak.[3] Ventura (then still using his legal name of Janos) attended the now-closed Cooper Elementary School and graduated from Minneapolis’ Roosevelt High School in 1969.
[edit] Navy career

From September 11, 1969, to September 10, 1975, during the Vietnam War era, Ventura served in the United States Navy. While on active duty, Ventura was part of Underwater Demolition Team 12 (UDT).[4] The UDTs were merged with the US Navy SEALs in 1983, 8 years after Ventura had left the Navy.

I don't think Michaels is that bad...she may not use the best form on some exercises, but she's a pretty effective motivator.

Plus, she looks nice in workout clothing...

Then again, I completely ripped a distal bicep tendon off the bone doing a tire flip with improper form, so I may not be the best person to ask...

Do you have this DVD? Or are you commenting on one or more of her other DVDs?

One member of our family watches this show, so I have occasion to see occasional snippets. I can’t believe they don’t get more injuries and heart attacks the way they have these people “working out.”

Neither...I’ve seen her on the Biggest Loser and I’ve seen her running 15 minute group sessions on free OnDemand videos on my cable system.

I’ve never worked out with kettle bells. I have some lower back issues and from what I see of the exercise, it’s not for me. Which leads me to question whether it’s really a good exercise at all, as I could see lower back issues from prolonged use. Also, poor technique could be really make it worse. But I have equipment at home and a good routine, so I’m content.

I’m not going to comment on Ms. Michaels competency as a fitness trainer or anything else about her.

I will say that having used kettlebells only after reading one of Pavel’s manuals...I wouldn’t fool with them or try to get someone else to play with them without a good foundation of basic knowledge.

Unless you like sprained wrists...

Russian Kettlebell W/O’s are the place to start. Search online. Beware of “certifed” Crossfit trainers/Gyms...and I say that at a 3 year Crossfitter. You can do a lot with a dumbbell in place of a kettlebell but they have a place in your WO if you wan to spend the money on them.

a distinction observed by those who study organizational charts,,,, Less so by other people. Jessie’s politics are mostly bizzare to me,, but it’s silly to try to undermine his seal service.
