MONKTON, Md. (AP) -- As an algae with a gross nickname invades pristine trout streams across the U.S., Maryland is about to become the first state to enforce a ban on a type of footgear the organism uses to hitchhike from stream to stream: felt-soled fishing boots.
The state Department of Natural Resources plans to prohibit wading with felt soles starting March 21 to curb the spread of invasive organisms that can get trapped in the damp fibers and carried from one body of water to another.
Similar bans will take effect April 1 in Vermont and next year in Alaska, aimed especially at didymo, a type of algae....

I see that slime in the rivers in the Sierra Nevada. It’s at it’s worst in late Summer and Fall when the flows are down and the water is warmer after the winter run-off.

They are going to start adding breeding colonies of plecostomus to the rid the infected rivers of the algae. The Feds had extra money from their Asian Beetle and Asian Carp experiments to breed a cold water version of the fish.

I love plecostomii. Mine always got to a foot within a year in a 10 gal. I always returned mine for a baby, but I reckon lots of people just flush them.
Neat fish, I like their ‘tude.

Grass carp keeps it cleaned out around here. Never heard it called “rock snot” before, though.

The next thing we are going to see is the environmental whackos will want a law passed that will both prohibit fishing and walking through water.

They’re useful for keeping the crud out of lakes and ponds but they’re weird fish, highly exciteable and large. They’ll scare the crap out of you if you’re walking around the lake, suddenly shooting out of the water and slapping down on the surface. It’s pretty loud.
