MPAA threatens to disconnect Google from the Internet

Over the last few months, Google has received more than 100 copyright infringement warnings from MPAA-affiliated movies studios: most are directed at users of Google's public Wi-Fi service but others are meant for Google employees. The MPAA is thus warning the search giant that it might get disconnected from the Internet.

"Copyright infringement also violates your ISP's terms of service and could lead to limitation or suspension of your Internet service. You should take immediate action to prevent your Internet account from being used for illegal activities," the movie companies write in various letters, according to TorrentFreak. Although the copyright holders use strong language, these notices are nothing simply warnings, and typically do not lead to legal action.

Every year, the major movie studios and record labels send out tens of thousands of warnings to Internet users suspected of sharing their content using P2P software, in order to persuade them to never download anything again. The copyright holders hire third parties to track down people who share certain their content. These companies then in turn request the files from others, log IP addresses of those who share files with them, look up the corresponding IP addresses, and automatically send out infringement notices.

ISPs are then asked to forward these notices to the customers in question, but in this case, Google has also been contacted. A few of the ones sent to Google are on behalf of Paramount Pictures and Columbia Pictures for sharing The Fighter and The Green Hornet, respectively.

I’m torn on this one. I think the MPAA is a bunch of goons, but at the same time it’s nice to see Google getting slapped with these.

Best case scenario would be that Google and the MPAA beat each other into oblivion with lawsuits to the point that they can’t bother anyone else any longer.

Google is far, far sleazier than Microsoft...but at least they do have engineers capable of giving us things that work...mostly.

Oh my!! Google might get its comcast account suspended? That was the answer all along! Google would be helpless without an ISP to access the internet! Snicker,,,

Looks like the MPAA found some deep-pockets to extort.

You go, girls.

Just remember that one lil' 17' torpedo boat sank the 30,000 ton pride of the Austro-Hungarian navy, St Isztvan"

Even with the leftist bent of Google execs I would side with them on this one. MPAA is threatening thousands of jobs at Google and I will guarantee you the large majority of their employees are not leftists like they are. Google as well as Dogpile and Bing are extremely useful tools and they all employ a lot of people who again should not be assumed to be all liberal. I side with maintaining as many jobs as possible rather than destroying more jobs and more of the economy. Besides, if they succeed with Google MPAA will next turn it’s socialist sights on Microsoft and Dogpile and whomever else they think they can get money out of.

Cute,,, but a useless analogy. Call me when a torpedo boat sinks Japan. Or even better, when a torpedo boat sinks a ship that just bought them. Psssst,,, don’t let this secret out, but google is currently deciding how to best BECOME an isp without wasting time buying a legacy provider using dated infrastructure. MPAA is in waaaaay over their heads.

lets say google instantly freezes out mpaa protected material. Lets say google moves offshore,,, or say google just purchases the main benefactors that support mpaa. (the studios are not doing so well).

and remember,,, mpaa is trying to play on googles turf. Hows that torpedo boat going to work in the high seas of the center of the Atlantic,,, in winter?
