You forgot the ‘LONE WOLF AND CUB’ series. I loved the original Japanese and English sub series (I volunteer my services for a Japanese anime group which specializes in subbing in English Japanese animes 24 hours after they are broadcast from Tokyo).
Tomi Wakayama was the Clint Eastwood of the Japanese films. I also suggest renting on Netflix (or downloading) the new SAMURAI 7 anime series which is based on Kurosawa’s original film.
Except the “bandits” are robots.
I’m the admin on the Donnie Yen US website. Ya know there’s an Ip Man 2 right? And he’s done Chen Zhen again. Donnie is currently THE go-to guy in MA films. He’s doing 3-D Monkey King. Not thrilled about that, but...
I always thought we lost out in not seeing Cynthia Rothrock in more mainstream movies. She had the flinty-but-vulnerable, tough-but-tender thing down and could act straight up.
Sigh. There’s one on every thread.
For the rest, if you want some really badass modern stuff check out Flashpoint and Sha Po Lang renamed, unfortunately, ‘Kill Zone’ with Yen and Sammo Hung.
Jackie Chan deserves to be remembered as one of filmdom’s great physical comedians. I read Buster Keaton was one of his inspirations.
I saw the outtakes as a Public Service, a “don’t try this at home, kids” warning.
The original 1984 “Karate Kid” will always be the ultimate martial arts movie. All about mastering fundamental values and fundamental moves.
I still remember an interview with one of the expert consultants (who had a cameo as the referee):
“The only movie I’ve worked on which shows what Karate is really all about.”
I agree. It’s a shame her career never developed as it should have. She seemed like she could do some of the action movies that Jolie now does.
Zatoichi is awesome. Years ago I bought a hand forged Zatoichi sword; one that you can’t buy anymore. The Zatoichi swords they sell now are cheap, and don’t even fit together well. I know: I bought another one, but it was trash. The good Zatoichi sword is like a red teak wood stick, that flies apart smoothly to reveal a flexible tempered steel sword with a wavy line near the blade, a sword that’s completely straight and not curved a bit. I once tried it on a small pine tree. It went through the two inch tree trunk like air. No resistance whatever. Whoa!
I *hated* that movie.
The Wesley Crusher of martial arts heroes.
For my money, the best martial arts movie I've ever seen that really shows the "why" of learning to fight is Billy Jack.
You will come across complete, animal a$$holes in your life. And sometimes, you just can't shoot 'em all, regardless of how much they're asking for it.
Flame on.
The drunken master....clasic
Prince of Space
(Often imitated, never duplicated, batteries not included.)
No, I didn’t forget Lone Wolf. You know Wakayama is Shintaro Katsu’s real life brother, right? Tomi is in the first Zatoichi film.
“Lone Wolf and Cub” is one of those films I remember from our little Saturday afternoon MA films club. They made 6, er 5, er 4, it is not clear. They made 4, and one renamed but is the same film as one of the first 4, that makes 5. Then they took the first two and edited them together to make the 6th, or 2nd, or whatever. Asian films are very confusing. They released them under two or three different names, you have to be careful what you buy on Amazon or you will end up with several copies of the same movie under different names. Ask me, I know.
“Shaolin Master Killer” = “The 36th Chamber of Shaolin” and “Shaolin vs. Ninja” = “Heroes of the East” or something like that, I forget. It gets really confusing.
Oh dude. Dude dude dude, you need to get out more.
Escrima is like Phillipino sticks, wouldn’t want to get whacked by somebody swinging those two with vengence in their mind.
Kenpo, karate, but again don’t want to get hit by that.
Kendo, now that’s the shizzle. Bamboo whoopass, even with all the body armor you guys wear. Bad day.
Watch “The Twilight Samurai” and “The Hidden Blade.” It’s a start, and two of the best out there.
Pure Chinese martial arts beauty. I still have the hots for old Snow, that woman is one of the sexiest chicks I have ever saw. And I have a thing for Asian females, but she is in the top 10. Her and Li Gong. And Zhang Ziyi, and Michelle Yeoh, and Celia Cheung. I could go on but “you know who” might stick her cute little head in here at any minute and bust me for my lust after other Asian womens.
Yah, “Hero” is an awesome movie. Jet is the no-name hero. I always remember that quote at the end “Our land ... “
Pure martial arts crack, fo sho.
Looks like “Prince of Gaigin Space” to me.
Ip Man 2? I almost don’t want them to do that, but it could be worthy.
Donnie Yen is good, real good. Back in my day all we had was Bruce Lee and some Shaw Bros stuff. I like Yen, he comes across as an honestly good guy, I have a couple of his films I haven’t watched yet. I watched “The Seven Swords” recently, it’s kinda kooky but OK. I got it for a few bux. I also have “Fourteen Blades” but have not put it in the DVD player yet. I have so much of this stuff, I have to try and balance the Chinese with the Koreans and the Japanese, it is a process not an event ;)
I’ll tell you another one I enjoyed, “The Rebel” with Johnny Ngyuen, so now the Vietnamese are in the game. That guy can do the Muay Thai thing, but the Viets will prolly kick my butt for calling it that. As far as Muay Thai goes, the first two Tony Jaa films were way more than decent. I’ve heard the 3rd one is goofy but haven’t seen it. Yet.
I’m surprized nobody has mentioned “Foot Fist Way” or whatever it is. I’ve never seen it, kinda sounds dumb, but when I posted my martial arts film tastes on a local board somebody came back at me with that one.
