I think the author of the article is stretching to find "trendy" new foods that people are eating. Most people are not eating these items.

Recent trips through my local supermarket reveal that most trendy new foods are fruit roll-ups, rice cakes of various flavors and textures and exotic flavors of tortilla chips (such as black bean and garlic). I think pickled pigs-feet are finally catching on in a big way as well.
