I remember the first McDonald’s I ever saw or even heard of. It was in Ft. Walton Bch. around 1960. The hamburgers were 15 cents which was cheap even back then.

I recall being surprised that they were good. My tastes can’t have changed that much. The quality has clearly gone down.

I used to like the Hot-n-Now olive burgers but I don’t think Hot-n-Now even exists anymore.

I remember the first one I went to around that same time period; early 1960s. Hamburgers were 10¢ and cheeseburgers 15¢. As I recall that was all that was available then; just the one patty regular hamburgers and fries. We used to buy 'em by the bag, 10 burgers for a $1.00.

And you are right, they were much better tasting back then, kind of like the burgers you now find at an out of the way old fashioned hamburger stand.

That’s because in 1960 they were not using ammonia-nized frozen meat patties. Many burger joints still used ground beef and they were like real burgers you could make at home. They had flavor, they did not have the life processed out of them, then have chemicals added back in to try to make them taste like a burger is supposed to taste.

For a number of reasons, I didn't eat at McDonald's until I was in college and they happened to be convenient, but I came to like their quarter pounders. I graduated, got a job, married and more or less went McD-free for a few years; when I returned, I couldn't believe these were the same burgers. Somewhere in the '80's, either their standards slipped or mine fell. Since I am still a food lowbrow, I doubt it was the latter.
