Eilat Mazar is a very interesting lady. I have read how she came to the place to dig for David's palace. Basically, Finkelstein threw out the challenge to go find it if anybody believed it.

Prof. Mazar took up the challenge started searching for a place to dig by looking at the description of the location by reading from 2 Samuel 5:17. She traced where she thought the palace should be based off that trace and started digging. 2 Samuel 5:17 states that: "When the Philistines heard that David had been anointed king over Israel, they went up in full force to search for him, but David heard about it and went down [from his palace] to the [citadel]."

She found monumental foundation stones that she says date from the first half of the 10th century B.C., the time of David. Now Finkelstein ridicules the find...
